“As soon as I decided to publish this collection of poetry, the pieces of the puzzle assembled, coming together like Wildfire. It all started with the poem of that name; an improvised piece I recorded into my phone one day.
It’s about nature’s fierce potential: yet this doesn’t make her evil. So too, cannot a woman be fierce if the need arises, without being condemned for her voice?
The words flowed out. From there, ripples began. I saw in my mind’s eye flashes of poetry from throughout my life – spanning many years, and many places. All connected by the thread of Nature’s grand web. All telling stories, in their own way, of my connection to her, or the wisdom she has imparted, or about her relationship with all women.
In my final year of law school, I studied environmental law; which included some branches of environmental philosophy. Eco-feminism was one such topic. Ecofeminists believe, amongst other things, that humanity’s current relationship with the planet is reflective of the harmful way women have been treated. The two are interconnected.
Back then, I remember I didn’t connect too well with that philosophy. Still, I was an avid environmentalist. My proudest piece of legal work was compiling the evidence base for a complaint to the European Commission, on England’s failure to adequately implement the Environmental Impact Assessment Directive.
And, over time, my relationship with the earth has only deepened. With that deepening, has emerged new aspects of what I see.
This collection is for Her. Our great planet Earth. For her darkness, and her light. The sacred gift of her endlessly pulsing, eternal heartbeat. Life exists forever through her eyes. Birth and death are mere facets of existence.
Through these pages, I hope you will step forth with me, on a journey of awakening to her wild magnificence. And in turn, within you, feel the blazing force to stand as her protector, not destroyer.”
