I thought I knew you and so I
Dropped the façade, that measured guard;
Protection from enemy eyes –
Then through a trembling night we waltzed
A shy courtship in the shadows;
You gaze, though soft, never wavered
My hardened heart began to heal
As gently I believed again
In a love that lives without lies –
But something changed, the spark smothered
Quick as mist falls in the mountains;
All alone, as before, I wept
And then I knew it wasn’t true
That all along it had been you
With your soul shrouded in disguise
